‘삼승’은 드러머 서경수, 작곡가 이민휘, 판화가 최경주가 각자 소리와 그림을 만들고, 서로의 추상을 뒤섞고 변형시키는 공동 프로젝트입니다. 세 작업자들은 점, 선, 면, 꼴, 각, 축, 상이라는 조형의 기본 요소들 이면에 놓인 비조형적 측면을 드러내는 일곱 제목들 - <맞선>, <맹점>, <울상>, <황당한 면>, <못 볼 꼴>, <빈축>, <안 될 각> - 을 정하고 자신의 방식대로 스케치를 한 뒤 서로의 결과물을 공유하면서 점차 작업을 발전시켰습니다.‘삼승’의 세 멤버는 자연스럽게 모이게 됐습니다. ‘아티스트 프루프’라는 프린팅 레이블을 운영하는 최경주와 음악을 만드는 이민휘가 구기동의 전시에서 우연히 만나 막걸리를 마시다 서경수가 드럼을 치는 공연에 가게 된 것이 계기가 되어 만남을 지속했고, 무엇인가 같이 해보자, 는 이야기가 오가다 ‘삼승’이 되었습니다.<맞선>, <맹점>, <울상>, <황당한 면>, <못 볼 꼴>, <빈축>, <안 될 각> 조금씩 비틀어진 일곱 개의 제목에서 알 수 있듯이, 세 사람의 취향은 엄격함보다 느슨함에, 경험을 넘어선 직관에, 평면이 확장된 레이어에 포개어져 있습니다. 이 공통분모 안에서 최경주의 스케치는 어떻게 개념이 시각화되는지, 그리고 그 조형적 드러남이 음악적 구조로 어떻게 발현될 수 있을지 고민하게 했고, 그 고민이 피아노와 드럼 소리가 되었을 때 그 소리는 다시 색과 선, 면, 질감으로 표현되었습니다. 같은 개념에서 출발한 다른 재료의 물성을 경험하고, 그동안 서로 전혀 다른 필드에서 작업했던 각자의 문법을 배우는 것은 또 다른 흥미로운 과정이었습니다.작업을 만나는 분들이 저희 작업의 과정을 미루어 짐작하고 그것과 공명하기를, 그림을 그리고 음악을 만드는 자들이 오래간 좇고 있는 허상과 그 허상이 가진 힘에 대해 숙고하기를 희망합니다. 창작자와 감상자 모두에게 있어 오래 벼려온 관성을 거스르는, 제 연장을 다시금 점검하고 자신의 언어가 지닌 내적 필연성을 좇는 수행의 시간이 있기를 고대합니다.

Dear friends,
We are happy to announce ( )³—“cubed”—a collective project by drummer Kyungsoo Seo, composer Minhwi Lee, and print artist Kyungjoo Choi. The artists have created sound and images which were interwoven and transformed referencing each other’s abstract. We have chosen seven keywords—spot[point], line, face, figure, angle, axis, and image—consisting of basic elements of plastic arts and decided on seven titles that demonstrate their non-formative sides: Line Arrangement, Blind Spot, Depressed Image, Ridiculous Face, Figure Unwatchable, Empty Axis, and Angle Non Sense. Individually-sketched ideas were shared and developed together.The three members of ( )³ have met organically. Choi runs the printing label Artist Proof while Lee makes music; the two happened to be at the same exhibition in Gugi-dong, then went to see a concert where Seo was playing drums. The three kept in touch and eventually came up with the idea of collaborating through ( )³.Line Arrangement, Blind Spot, Depressed Image, Ridiculous Face, Figure Unwatchable, Empty Axis, and Angle Non Sense;The somewhat oblique titles attest to the three’s interests that come together in looseness rather than rigidity, in intuition that transcends experience, in layers that extend surfaces. Operating on these common denominators, Choi’s sketches raised the question of how to visualize concepts and how to manifest visual expressions into musical structures; the ideas expressed as the sound of piano and drums then were transformed again into colors, lines, surfaces, and textures. To experience different materialities stemming from the same concept and to learn the languages of one another’s respective fields was an interesting journey.The hope here is for the reader, listener and audience to imagine the creative process and resonate with it; and for the artists and musicians, to reflect on the illusion they for so long have been pursuing, on the power of that illusion. For both the artist and spectator, and musician and audience, we look forward to a time of pilgrimage in which established habits are reversed, tools are re-examined and the inner necessity of one’s language is followed.
